The problem: he's the other reason she's a spinster.Book two in the Ladies of Devon series, The Lady of Larkspur Vale is a childhood friends-to-lovers and second chance romance story. It is a clean Regency romance that continues telling the story of the four women who make up a literary society in Devon and form a lasting friendship.Book The Lady of Larkspur Vale: Sweet Regency Romance (Ladies of Devon Book 2) Review :
This second book in the Ladies of Devon series is lovely! The idea of the four friends each having a story of their own is great. I'm looking forward to the other lady's books in the future! I do recommend reading the first book in this series - The Jewels of Halstead Manor - before reading this one. The first one gives a foundation for part of the story overall - as well as who some of the characters are that make appearances in this book as well - which gives a great feeling of familiarity, and continuation. The storyline and characters of The Lady of Larkspur Vale are well written. I experienced a wide variety of emotions and stayed into the story to the end - which is literally a beautiful ending...I really liked Mabel! She's graceful, has a gentle, caring heart, but is tall for a woman. Mac is handsome, charming, kindhearted - and taller than Mabel - which makes him the perfect match! She's been in love with him forever. So it's really touching when he realizes he's in love with her! Sigh... I love how he interacts with little Pippa - who is spunky and adorable. I hope she has her own story when she grows up!There are also several side stories that add a lot of depth to this book, and made it enjoyable overall.I'm glad I read this book. I really like this author and have enjoyed all of her books so far. I could just sigh with happiness over this book. Seriously, Kasey’s books have been making me so cheerful and this one lived up to that same reputation I’ve come to expect. The adore the literary society and that the group of women are supporting one another. It’s such a breath of fresh air compared to the cattiness and gossip we see so often among society. I love the story in the countryside, I love that this isn’t involving titles and wealth, and I loved the characters. I cannot wait to read more of this series and I’m unbelievably happy with how everything turned out.Mable’s selfless and kindhearted nature makes her instantly likable. I love that she doesn’t fit society’s typical expectations for a beautiful, dainty woman and I also loved that she would rather raise her little sister and care for her elderly grandmother than attend social functions and find some handsome gentleman to sweep her off her feet. I just loved her!I thought Mac (I cannot think of him as Liam; he’s just Mac to me) almost came across as pensive and distant from Mabel’s POV so I was glad to have narrative from his POV as well. I really liked him, though he may have been a bit easy to provoke from other gentlemen. But I loved imagining this barreling giant of a man being tongue-tied around Mabel. He’s really a dashing hero.Pippa is so impulsive and funny. I got a kick out of her antics and busyness and I’m glad she’s being raised by an older sister who isn’t trying to make her conform to societal expectations and killing her personality. Charles was hard for me to like. He seemed a little to caught up in himself and never noticed or cared how his actions were affecting others. I wanted to like him, if for nothing than Mabel’s sake, but he does need to think more of others. Giulia is again so wonderful. I adore her. I never liked either of the Misses Pemberton. They’re too calculating and selfish and I didn’t like anything about them. I’m in agreement with Mac on Mr. Wright. I did not like Mabel’s father at first. I was actually pretty angry at him toward the beginning of the book. I thought he was so engrossed in the patriarchy, believing he can live his life and so what he pleaded and just expect the women in his life to be pleased with it—and then tell those women how to live even if he hadn’t been around for years!—and I didn’t like him. Thankfully he redeems himself later by listening to Mabel and I was so grateful. Gram is hilarious. I loved her misunderstandings and laughed out loud several times when she would misunderstand what someone would say to her.I wholeheartedly recommend this book and look forward to the next in the series.
